Controversial Topics

Controversial topics were always annoying to talk about in class because you learn who your friends really are. You are not suppose to judge someone about what they believe in, but if they are just being ignorant that is another thing. In high school we did a vote to see who believed in pro-life or pro-choice. I am pro-choice. The funny(not so funny) thing is all of the girls in my class was pro-choice while some of the boys(most of them) were pro-life. That started the worst argument I have ever seen. Everyone started getting loud and cursing. Bottom line is men should not have a say in this topic. It is a women’s body and she gets to decide what she does with it.

Keys to College Success

The first key states “stick to your own definition of success in college.” All my life I was taught to make good grades. so I have not really been learning the material I would just know it for the test and forget about it. so coming into college was a struggle with that. The second rule states, “take one small class every semester.” This is a nice little key that I live by. Right now I only have three classes instead of the seven I had in college and I do not feel over loaded with class work. The third key states, “engage with faculty, early and often.” I hate this key because I do not like talking to people I do not know. So I struggled with this. The sixth key states, “if it is an option, live on campus freshman year.” It was not an option for me but I would have liked to live on campus and experience my own freedom.

The Phenix City Story

The Phenix City Story is a movie based on the life of Albert Patterson’s son. It tells the story of Phenix City once known as Sin City back in the 1950s. It talks about the corruption of the politicians, judges, and law enforcers. Mob bosses would bride the law enforcers to look the other way while they got away with crimes. They did things such as gambling and intoxication. The law makers did more than just look away, they also bought votes for upcoming elections. The movie begins as Albert Patterson is running for office. His son in the movie is beaten while the police do nothing and just watch. I don’t know how much truth is in this movie, but it is an interesting movie to watch.

Things to do in Columbus, GA

There are not many fun things to do in Columbus as a teenager unless you like going to the movies. I personally love scary movies so I go to the movies a lot. There is also a range of different restaurants to eat at. My favorite at the moment is Texas Roadhouse. My favorite thing to do in Columbus is walk the riverwalk. It is so beautiful. Especially walking at sunset and sunrise. I also like the whole downtown area. It is really pretty there just walking the strips and listening to the music they have on the weekends. They also have White Water Rafting, but I would never do that because people die a lot in the river and I do not want to die yet.

Three Types of Friends

We all different types of friends. One being the “mom friend.” These are the types that make sure you don’t get in trouble and help you when help is needed. If I were to scrape my arm this friend would be the one to put my arm in a whole stent when in reality I could have just put some water on it. The next type of friend is the wild one. These are the ones that always want to go to parties and do wild stuff. I have also learned these are the ones with the most strict parents. The last type of friend is the smart one. This type knows exactly how to get out of any trouble we may be in. They usually keep track of times and everything like if we were to go see a movie, they would make sure we got there on time.

Carson McCullers

Carson McCullers was an American writer. Carson’s name was actually Lula Carson Smith till she got it changed later on in life. She was born on February 19th in 1917 in Columbus Georgia. Her parents owned a jewelry store and during that time she wanted to be a musician and started taking piano classes at 10. Ever since a young age she suffered from rheumatic fever. She was always a sick child growing up. When she was experiencing these fevers she put off music and started writing stories. In 1934 she set off for New York City where she continued to chase her dream. At 19 she had her first story published in December of 1936. In August of 1967 she suffered a stroke which put her in the hospital. She was in a coma for 46 days when she finally died in September.

Frank Thomas

Frank Thomas was a hall of famer and now spends his days as a Fox Sports studio analyst. He had an amazing career in Major League Baseball and was one of the most feared baseball players in history. He is also now apart of Foxs pregame and postgame shows. He grew up in Columbus Georgia and grew up playing baseball, basketball, and football. Surprisingly he was not ghost in 1986 to be in Major League Baseball Draft. he instead chose to accept a football scholarship. The scholarship was to Auburn University to play tight end. Even there he had a successful career.

General Benning

Before reading an article about General Benning all I knew was Fort Benning was named after him. After doing some research I learned that he was born in 1814 on April 2nd. Benning studied at the University of Georgia and graduated in 1834. He worked as a solicitor general for a few years then married Mary Howard. He had 10 children with her. He ran and lost for the role of a lawman. He ran again as a US Congress on a Southern Rights platform. He unfortunatley lost again. He was eventually elected associate justice of the southern Georgia Supreme Court in 1853. In 1861 he became colonel. In 1852 he received the nickname “Old Rock” for his “steadfastness.” Unfortunately on his way to court for an appearance in July 1875 he suffered from a stroke and died.

The Kindness of a Stranger

I was at Walmart one day waiting in a typical long line that you see at any Walmart. Well I was standing in line for what seemed like an hour because this lady was buying up the whole store it seemed like. So it took the cashier forever to even scan the items. When she was finally done scanning the lady pulled out a bunch coupons. At this point I am just looking for another line but all the other lines were just as full. So after scanning all the coupons the total came out to be about thirty dollars. Well I guess the lady thought the total was going to be no more than twenty dollars and she started cursing at the cashier. Well the lady behind her just ended up paying for her whole groceries so she can just leave. If that was an act of kindness, or just trying to get her out of there, I will never know.

Bessie Coleman and 9 Other Black Pioneers in Aviation

I have heard of a few of these flyers, but they were only taught to me in school. I am surprised none of the other flyers were not taught as well. It shocked me that during those years there were black flyers. They already had to deal with opression. Bessie Coleman was black and a woman. She must have had a lot of backlash back then. She was one of the ones that was taught to us in history class. Eugene Bullard was the first African-American Military Combat Pilot. He also lived in Columbus Georgia which is also very intersting. He is very remarkable in that he was a fighter pilot. I see lots of movies about fighter pilots and i would never want to do that of course but it seems so interesting to see. Flying a plane is hard enough but flying a plane and also being at war is a whole new level.
