General Benning

Before reading an article about General Benning all I knew was Fort Benning was named after him. After doing some research I learned that he was born in 1814 on April 2nd. Benning studied at the University of Georgia and graduated in 1834. He worked as a solicitor general for a few years then married Mary Howard. He had 10 children with her. He ran and lost for the role of a lawman. He ran again as a US Congress on a Southern Rights platform. He unfortunatley lost again. He was eventually elected associate justice of the southern Georgia Supreme Court in 1853. In 1861 he became colonel. In 1852 he received the nickname “Old Rock” for his “steadfastness.” Unfortunately on his way to court for an appearance in July 1875 he suffered from a stroke and died.
